About:

Surrounded by traditional music from childhood, and with a formative visit to St Chartier luthier’s festival in France at age 11, there are barely a few folk instruments I haven’t repaired, tinkered with, or built for myself over the years. But it’s only more recently (and with a few health roadblocks on the way) that I’ve put my head down to really dive into the necessary fine woodworking skills and understanding needed to make the violins, (folk and classical alike) and related stringed instruments for which I have a passion. Tone and response is what I’m obsessed with, and while chasing this has led me down some strange blind alleys, the quest is what keeps me obsessed enough to put in the hard work.

Raised in Sheffield, I spent 3 decades away in the south (studying and working as an illustrator, artist, and animation director -visual and hand-making skills put directly to work in instrument making), but am now living again on the outskirts of Sheffield, which has a wonderful community of musicians and instrument makers (“Little Cremona” as recently coined by a violin making friend). I have my own tiny workshop that is a vast improvement on the houseboat and picnic bench where I did much of my learning about making.
